The performers wore masks that both amplified volume and expressiveness, as well as exaggerating facial expressions. Without sets, the words the characters spoke created the entire scene, and they did so magnificently. A building in the back of the stage, the skene, served as a fixed structure for entrances and exits. The stagings had costumes, but little scenery in the modern sense. What a writer and performers did with a story was what mattered. In ancient Greece, the underlying stories came from the tales of Greek gods and famous early heroes, and they were generally common knowledge-viewers already knew what was going to happen. You want to wonder what will happen, what’s coming next. In today’s theater, unless you go to see a revival or a very famous play, you expect to be surprised by the plot. The festivals went on for many days, and people would see tragedies and comedies, one after another, tales of gods and men, under the Mediterranean sky. The audience for these plays was very large-the theaters could seat over 15,000, and likely included women and slaves. The Bacchae is one of the best-known works from the golden age of Greek drama, the fifth century BCE, when plays were performed in large open air theaters as part of seasonal festivals called Dionysia (named after the Greek god who is the central character in this play). So what do you need to know about The Bacchae before you read it? Section 5: Notes and Documents from ICON Disaster Preparedness Workshop. It transcends generations, time, and even worlds. As he and Jarrod slowly uncover his past, they realize that the story is a lot more complicated than they initially thought. Not only is the story hidden, but Aiden has simply lost large swaths of his memory. However, when Aiden’s former best friend Jarrod comes back to town he surfaces an entire hidden story in Aiden’s past. Aiden Lockwood is your typical outcast in your typical small town high school. But no YA book is quite like Wonders of the Invisible World by Christopher Barzak. You have to admit, a lot of YA is weird with weird characters in weird situations. I think one of the most interesting and successful parts of the young adult genre is the “weird” factor. Wonders of the Invisible World is a refreshing adventure into the space of fantasy young adult genre that feels completely original "A patchwork story is the shame of the refugee," Nayeri writes early in the novel. Barliona: a virtual world jam-packed with monsters, battles-and, predictably, players. Survival Quest: Der Weg des Schamanen: Roman (Survival Quest-Serie, Band 1) Paperback 21 Dec. By meeting and talking to these fascinating female secret-keepers who are still alive today, Tessa Dunlop captures their extraordinary journeys into an adult world of war, secrecy, love and loss. In the middle of the night, hunched over meaningless pieces of paper, tending mind-blowing machines, sitting listening for hours on end, theirs was invariably confusing, monotonous and meticulous work, about which they could not breathe a word. But they all have one common bond, the war and their highly confidential part in it. A refugee from Belgium, a Scottish debutante, a Jewish 14-year-old, and a factory worker from Northamptonshire - the Bletchley Girls confound stereotypes. There had always been girls at the Park but soon they outnumbered the men three to one. From 8 million working women just over 7000 were hand-picked to work at Bletchley Park and its outstations. The scale of female involvement in Britain during the Second World War wasn't matched in any other country. Firm friendships were made as their epic journey unfolded on paper. It is their story, told in their voices Tessa met and talked to 15 veterans, often visiting them several times. The Bletchley Girls weaves together the lives of fifteen women who were all selected to work in Britain's most secret organisation - Bletchley Park. Luckily the narrator had a good accent and it helped me enjoy it more on audible than I think I may have if I read it. Honestly, I don’t usually love books set in other countries as much, though there are absolutely exceptions, but the expressions, spellings, and locations sometimes take me out of the story, and I don’t relate as well. But EL James has a lot of haters so I took that with a grain of salt. The only thing I knew going in was that it took place in England and that there were a ton of people trashing it. I never read the blurb, even when I shared it. James changed my life in many ways, so it was with a bit of trepidation that I decided to listen to The Mister. Sure, there were some issues, but overall, how the books made me FEEL overruled everything. Currently a standalone, but a little open-ended for a follow-up. James Narrated by Dominic Thorburn, Jessica O’Hara-Baker Contemporary Romance. I play with words, hoping that some combination, even a chance combination, will say what I want. ― Doris Lessing, quote from The Golden Notebook Those that stay must remember, always, and all the time, that they are being moulded and patterned to fit into the narrow and particular needs of this particular society.” Those of you who are more robust and individual than others will be encouraged to leave and find ways of educating yourself - educating your own judgements. You are being taught by people who have been able to accommodate themselves to a regime of thought laid down by their predecessors. The slightest look at history will show how impermanent these must be. What you are being taught here is an amalgam of current prejudice and the choices of this particular culture. We are sorry, but it is the best we can do. We have not yet evolved a system of education that is not a system of indoctrination. “Ideally, what should be said to every child, repeatedly, throughout his or her school life is something like this: 'You are in the process of being indoctrinated. Eventually that friendship turned into something breathtakingly more, before it fell spectacularly apart. Until she receives the call that sends her racing back to Barry’s Bay and into the orbit of Sam Florek-the man she never thought she’d have to live without.įor six summers, through hazy afternoons on the water and warm summer nights working in his family’s restaurant and curling up together with books-medical textbooks for him and work-in-progress horror short stories for her-Percy and Sam had been inseparable. Instead of glittering summers on the lakeshore of her childhood, she spends them in a stylish apartment in the city, going out with friends, and keeping everyone a safe distance from her heart. They say you can never go home again, and for Persephone Fraser, ever since she made the biggest mistake of her life a decade ago, that has felt too true. |
